Praise & Worship: Vintage Maranatha Music, January 28th, 2012

I came to faith in April of 1976 as the result of a Saturday night concert at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa.  For the next two years this was our church home.  During a Sunday morning service we sang “Shepherd’s Song”  which impacted me profoundly.  This was music I was not familiar with and it stirred my spirit deeply.  That was my first experience with the songs from Maranatha Music.  I can’t tell you how often I listened to those praise albums and the cassettes I wore out which led me to buy them again!!  I suspect I’m not the only one from the mid 70′s and earlier whose life was impacted by this music.  If this music is new to you I hope you listen.  It’s worth it.  All of these songs are taken from the first three Maranatha praise albums. 1. E-Dawg,
These are some of the very first Christian songs I learned how to play on piano and/or lead singing. Along with hymns, they are still very meaningful and dear to me, as they provide the accompaniment to my early experience with God and the church.

  2. CK-DAWG!! On the CD’s I have of this early music they also have each song done without vocals. I imagine hearing them on piano is beautiful to hear. Glad you dropped by.

  3. I remember those days well as I was responsible for the ushering and counseling ministry from 1976 through 1979.

Such beautiful music, such a glorious move of the Spirit. May God bless us again with such an outpouring…

  4. And on that day in 1976 you were probably the man who directed me to the prayer room after I prayed to receive Christ!! Pretty small world.

I remember every detail of that night and I’ve only experienced it a few times since then. And woven into that is the music of those days.

  5. Thank you, Allan…these were wonderful. Long before Calvary Chapels were common on the east coast, we knew of the work going on in Calvary Chapel mainly through the music that was being produced on the west coast. We had Phil Keaggy and a few others entering the CCM market but most of the great praise music was coming from the west. “Spirit Song” will always remind me of Chuck Smith. And Evie, too, who grew up in the town next to me. “Open My Eyes” is an especially beautiful song. I thoroughly enjoyed this peaceful worship music (and stroll down memory lane!)

  6. Tracy, You’re dating yourself! :) This is the music that I knew as I attended CCCM for a few years in the 70′s. I went from a rock and roll nut to listening to singer/songwriters before I was saved. That prepared me for music like this which I may not have been open to otherwise. Thanks for sharing.
